Macro photography: Lipoptena Cervi

deer ked or deer fly - lipoptena cervi. Photo: Henrik KettunenThis is quite unique insect in Finnish forests. You don´t find them, They´ll find You - specially in late summer and autumn. Normally they think you are an elk or a moose, and they crab Your hair and drop their wings. Many times it´s a demanding task to get rid of them (from Your hair). On elks they suck blood for 15-25 minutes. But on human they normally understand that the object was wrong, and they normally don´t do anything. Many thinks deer fly are more disgusting then mosquitos.

My photo-modell was a farmed version, but living. I did get it from university collections. They are transported and stored in cold. After taking the fly on indoor normal temeprature You may have 30 seconds time to take the photos. If You use more time You´ll have the fly in Your hair. I took the risk and was lucky. This was a shooting on demand for a company who produces insect repellents.
